Miscellaneous Information
Born 1 April 1922. He attended New Farm State School, Brisbane and enlisted straight from school.
Although flying as Flight Engineer on this, his first and last operation with No. 83 Squadron, he had in fact gained his Pilot's wings.
The caption for the AWM photo begs the question as to whether he flew earlier ops before arriving at No. 83 Squadron. It is certainly true that the Operational Training Units (OTUs) detailed crews who were nearing the end of their training for the Thosand Bomber Raids, so it is entirely possible. He had been training with 14 OTU and had arrived at No. 83 on 9 July 1942. It reads: "Studio portrait of 405008 Sergeant (Sgt) Ralph Alexander Wilson of Brisbane, Qld, a pilot in the RAAF. His first mission was piloting a Hampden bomber as part of the 1,000 bomber raid on Bremen on 26 June 1942. Transferred to No. 83 Squadron RAF, a month later, Sgt Wilson the pilot of Lancaster II, R5619 code OL-S, and his crew were lost without trace on a bombing raid to Duisburg, Germany, on 26 July 1942. Sgt Wilson was 20 years of age. The other members of crew lost in this aircraft were; Flying Officer Herbert Boyd Barber RCAF; Pilot Officer (PO) Harold Hopper Whitehead, RAF, DFM; PO Jack William Corfield RAF, DFM; Sgt Ernet Arnold Rudge, RAF; Sgt Robert Hugh Brash, RAF and Sgt John McCarten, RAF. The names of these airmen are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial".
